Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released the Junior Engineer Examination, 2026 for recruitment to Junior Engineer posts in various Government of India organizations/offices and Scientific Assistant in the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The posts are Group ‘B’ in Level-6 of the Pay Matrix, ₹35,400–₹1,12,400. The tentative number of vacancies is 1,748. Online applications can be submitted from 02 September 2026 to 22 September 2026, with fee payment allowed up to 23 September 2026. Important Qualification Conditions

Where experience is required, the experience must have been acquired after completion of the required educational qualification.

Internship, training and research experience obtained during the course of acquiring the educational qualification will not be considered as the required experience.

Engineering and other prohibited disciplines obtained through ODL/Online mode are not accepted except where permitted and recognized under applicable statutory provisions.


Age Limit

The crucial date for determining age is 01 August 2026.

For posts having an upper age limit of 30 years, the candidate's date of birth should be between:

02 August 1996 and 01 August 2008, both dates inclusive.

For posts having an upper age limit of 32 years, the candidate's date of birth should be between:

02 August 1994 and 01 August 2008, both dates inclusive.


Age Relaxation

SC/ST: 5 years

OBC: 3 years

PwBD – UR/EWS: 10 years

PwBD – OBC: 13 years

PwBD – SC/ST: 15 years

Ex-Servicemen: 3 years after deduction of military service rendered from the actual age.

Defence Personnel disabled in operation – UR/EWS/OBC: 3 years

Defence Personnel disabled in operation – SC/ST: 8 years.

The selection process consists of:

Paper-I – Computer Based Examination

Appointment as per applicable conditions

Paper-I is qualifying in nature. Candidates are shortlisted for Paper-II based on their performance in Paper-I and the prescribed minimum qualifying marks.

Final merit is prepared using normalized Paper-II marks along with the candidate's post/organization preference.


Minimum Qualifying Marks

UR: 30%

OBC/EWS: 25%

All other categories: 20%.


Examination Pattern


Paper-I

Paper-I consists of:

General Intelligence & Reasoning: 50 questions, 50 marks.

General Awareness: 50 questions, 50 marks.

General Engineering / Relevant Subject: 100 questions, 100 marks.

Total: 200 questions and 200 marks.

Duration is 2 hours.

For eligible candidates using a scribe, duration is 2 hours 40 minutes.


Paper-II

Paper-II consists of the relevant engineering/subject paper.

Total: 100 questions, 300 marks.

Duration is 2 hours.

For eligible candidates using a scribe, duration is 2 hours 40 minutes.


Negative Marking

In Paper-I, 0.25 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.

In Paper-II, 1 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.

The questions are objective-type multiple-choice questions.

Questions are set in Hindi and English.


Pay Scale / Salary Details

The posts are Group ‘B’ posts in Level-6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission Pay Matrix.

Pay Scale: ₹35,400 – ₹1,12,400/-


How to Apply


Step 1

Visit the official SSC website and complete One-Time Registration (OTR).


Step 2

Keep required information ready, including mobile number, email ID, Aadhaar/alternative ID, Matriculation details and other applicable information.


Step 3

Complete the OTR with personal and educational details.

The name, father's name, mother's name, date of birth and Matriculation details should be entered exactly as recorded in the Matriculation certificate.


Step 4

Login using the Registration Number and password.


Step 5

Go to Live Examination → Junior Engineer Examination, 2026 → Apply.

Upload the signature.

The signature should be in JPEG/JPG format, approximately 10–20 KB, with dimensions of about 6 cm × 2 cm.


Step 9

Preview the application and carefully verify all details.


Step 10

Submit the application after completing the declaration and captcha.


Step 11

Pay the applicable application fee online.


Step 12

Save/print the submitted application for future reference.

If the Photo-ID does not contain Date of Birth, an additional original document such as Matriculation Certificate, Board Marks Sheet or Birth Certificate must be carried.


Important Instructions / Terms & Conditions

Candidates should ensure that they satisfy all requirements regarding educational qualification, experience, age and other eligibility conditions before applying.

Certificates/documents supporting educational qualifications, caste/category and other claims will be checked during Document Verification. If any claim made in the application is not supported by the required documents, candidature may be cancelled.

Admission Certificates will not be sent by post or email. Candidates must download them from the SSC website.

Examination city and centre information will be uploaded approximately 10 days before the examination.

Candidates must mention Registration ID, registered Email ID, Mobile Number, Name, Date of Birth and Examination name when communicating with SSC.
